Hypnotherapy
There are many misunderstandings about hypnosis and hypnotherapy, largely due to entertainers who have misused this very helpful technique. When used correctly, hypnosis is simply purposeful communication to get the desired response from the subconscious. It is a state of focused attention allowing for enhanced communication between the subconscious and conscious parts of the mind. Hypnotherapy is the use of hypnosis for therapeutic benefits. It is NOT brainwashing or a taking control of the mind by another person. When using hypnosis a person is not powerless. As a matter of fact, hypnosis doesn’t even require being “under” and certainly doesn’t render a person unconscious.
Modern scientific evidence supports the many benefits of hypnotherapy. Research indicates that hypnotherapy is effective in treating anxiety, addictions, pain, stress, and insomnia, to name a few. It is also helpful for weight loss, smoking cessation, and treating other unwanted habits. Studies are also discovering the benefits of hypnotherapy in child birth and palliative care. Mayo Clinic’s 2012 review of research on the risks of hypnosis noted that when conducted by a trained professional, hypnosis appears to be a safe complementary and alternative treatment.
