There are many misunderstandings about hypnosis and hypnotherapy, largely due to entertainers who have misused this very helpful technique. When used correctly, hypnosis is simply purposeful communication to get the desired response from the subconscious. It is a state of focused attention allowing for enhanced communication between the subconscious and conscious parts of the mind. Hypnotherapy is the use of hypnosis for therapeutic benefits. It is NOT brainwashing or a taking control of the mind by another person. When using hypnosis a person is not powerless. As a matter of fact, hypnosis doesn’t even require being “under” and certainly doesn’t render a person unconscious.

Modern scientific evidence supports the many benefits of hypnotherapy. Research indicates that hypnotherapy is effective in treating anxiety, addictions, pain, stress, and insomnia, to name a few. It is also helpful for weight loss, smoking cessation, and treating other unwanted habits. Studies are also discovering the benefits of hypnotherapy in child birth and palliative care. Mayo Clinic’s 2012 review of research on the risks of hypnosis noted that when conducted by a trained professional, hypnosis appears to be a safe complementary and alternative treatment.

As a certified hypnotherapist, I use a form of hypnotherapy known as HAPI (Hypnosis Accelerated Processing Interventions), developed and taught by Dr. Rachael Haskell. HAPI focuses on active conversations with clients using imagery, metaphors, visualization, and relaxation whereby the client is clearly an active participant and fully present. By using this type of conversation, we help the subconscious mind and the conscious mind become more aligned and integrated with each other, reducing internal conflict and allowing the individual to feel more in control and empowered to achieve the desired changes in behavior.

Additionally, only treatment goals agreed on by the client and therapist are pursued. If you are interested in hypnotherapy please contact us today. We’ll be glad to answer any questions and discuss how you can benefit from hypnotherapy!
